Elon Musk is currently the richest person in the world, with a net worth of $185 billion. He is the founder, CEO, and CTO of SpaceX, co-founder of Tesla Motors, and chairman of SolarCity. He also founded The Boring Company, a tunnel construction company.

Elon Musk was born on June 28, 1971, in Pretoria, South Africa, to Maye (née Haldeman), a model and dietitian from Canada, and Errol Musk, a South African electromechanical engineer, pilot, and sailor. He has a younger brother, Kimbal, and a younger sister, Tosca. His paternal grandmother was British, and he also has Pennsylvania Dutch ancestry, and his maternal grandfather was American, from Minnesota. After his parents divorced in 1980, Musk lived mostly with his father in Pretoria, South Africa.

PayPal: First investment

He moved to California in 1995 to attend Stanford University but decided instead to pursue a business career, co-founding web software company Zip2 with his brother Kimbal. The start-up was acquired by Compaq for $307 million in 1999. Musk co-founded the online bank X.com that same year, which merged with Confinity in 2000 to form the company PayPal and was subsequently bought by eBay in 2002 for $1.5 billion.

In 2016, he was ranked 25th in the Forbes list of The World’s Most Powerful People and was ranked joint-first on the Forbes list of the Most Innovative Leaders of 2019. In 2017 and 2018, he was ranked the second most powerful person in the world by Forbes.

Musk has stated that his goals for SpaceX, Tesla, and SolarCity are to “help humanity transition to a sustainable future”. He has said that he plans to use the profits from these companies to fund a Mars colony. He has also said that he wants to create a “hyperloop” transportation system that would allow travel between major cities on Earth at near-supersonic speeds.
